Suncoast Beach Drive and South Coolum Road Projects
Council is working to complete updated designs for the proposed South Coolum Road link between South Coolum Road and Suncoast Beach Drive.
We are updating all permits and designs to meet the latest standards. The link road construction is expected to begin in 2028.
Background
In May 2009, council investigated options to connect Suncoast Beach Drive to the Sunshine Motorway. Options included extension of South Coolum Road to connect with Suncoast Beach Drive west of Mt Coolum. Council selected the option that had overwhelming community support and minimised impact on the surrounding environment both during and after construction.
Project update
Council is working with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to finalise environmental permits and update designs to latest standards including:
- south facing ramps to the motorway
- improved active transport outcomes on Suncoast Beach Drive and South Coolum Road
- potential construction staging options to ensure critical elements of the projects are realised as soon as practically possible.
Where to from here
In 2026 environmental investigations and reporting will be progressed. Detailed design will begin.
Construction of the projects will start after finalisation of the detailed designs and confirmation of environmental approvals. The timing of construction for each project is subject to future budget consideration It will be confirmed as the projects progress.
