The Nambour waste facility is being upgraded with construction and improvements to be completed in the next 3 years.

Guided by the Sunshine Coast Resource Recovery Strategy, we are working towards our goal to be a zero net emissions organisation by 2041. Aiming for a cleaner, greener future and a sustainable Sunshine Coast.

One of the ways we are doing this is to move towards a circular economy approach to waste management. This is where products and materials keep circulating in the economy for as long as possible.

Project scope

The Nambour waste precinct is being upgraded to sustainably manage our region’s future waste and move towards a circular economy.

More than $83 million of work is underway. Included are:

  • a new state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility, also know as a MRF (sounds like murf) - now complete
  • a new resource recovery centre and landfill improvements - currently underway.

A signalised traffic intersection has been installed at Cooney Road and Nambour–Bli Bli Road for the safety of all road users.

Construction work on the precinct has begun. Redirections may be in place and we thank you in advance for your patience. Please follow onsite signage and traffic control for your safety and the safety of our construction team.

Nambour waste facility - reopened Monday 8 September

Nambour Resource Recovery Centre re-opened to the public on Monday 8 September.

The landfill is not yet open for commercial trucks to dispose of waste. All vehicles greater than 4.5 tonne GVM

We ask commercial customers to continue to use the Caloundra waste facilities until further notice.

We appreciate your understanding during this important upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Nambour waste facility now open?
It is open to the general public from Monday 8 September 2025.

The site is not yet open for commercial trucks, including skip bin operators, to dispose of waste (including concrete or green waste disposal). Any vehicles over 4.5 tonne GVM are to continue to use Caloundra waste facility.

When will the Nambour waste facility be open for waste disposal by commercial trucks and large vehicles?
In order to provide a safe environment for the public, the opening is being restricted to our waste fleet and domestic customers initially.

What is the circular economy and how does this upgrade support it?
A circular economy focuses on reusing, recycling, and reducing waste. The upgrade helps keep materials in use longer and reduces landfill reliance.

Will my household bins still be emptied during the closure?
There will be no disruption to your kerbside bin collection. All household bins will still be emptied during the closure of the Nambour tip.

Materials recovery facility (MRF)

At the MRF mixed recycling from yellow-lid bins are taken to be sorted and separated into recyclable fractions:

  • paper and cardboard
  • differing grades of plastic, glass, steel and aluminium.

These materials are then ready for manufacturers to make new products.

The new MRF is now open and operational. The project involved construction of a new building, fitted out with latest technology sorting equipment. The new MRF is a state-of-the-art-facility with better optical sorting capacity and more capabilities. This means more types of product can be recycled and the quality of the recycled material will improve.

Resource recovery centre

At the Resource recovery centre (RRC) visitors can separate their recyclable household items and materials to reduce waste going to landfill.

Items to go to the RRC include material that can’t go in your yellow-lid kerbside recycling bin:

  • mobile phones
  • paint
  • batteries
  • white goods.

The RRC at Nambour will be upgraded and expanded for a more streamlined and better experience for our community.

A temporary resource recovery centre will be available during construction on on the new facilities. This will help to ensure minimal impact to customers.

Once construction of the new RRC begins, wait times may increase. Signage will be in place to advise of any impacts. As an alternative, please use Buderim or Caloundra resource recovery centres.

Cooney Road and Nambour–Bli Bli Road intersection upgrade

The intersection at Bli Bli and Cooney Road has been upgraded to improve traffic flow and safety. The work included upgrading and widening the existing intersection, and installing new traffic signals, designated right turn lanes, road islands, and drainage infrastructure.

Where to from here

Future plans for the Nambour precinct also include options for a:

  • second-hand market or tip shop to contribute to the reuse economy
  • landfill gas to energy plant. The plant would generate power and prevent greenhouse gas emissions being released into the atmosphere.

Background

The precinct was approved in 2018. A program of works is now underway to transform the Nambour waste precinct into a regional facility with the ability to sustainably recycle and process our region’s future waste.

Community engagement

Council undertook community consultation as part of the development application process in 2017.
