Walking
Walking is a fun, free and easy way to get around. Try walking to work, your favourite cafe, school, sport or the shops to skip the traffic and improve your health and wellbeing.
Walking isn’t just for fun or fitness, it’s a great way to travel! Whether you’re heading to school or work, visiting friends, or running errands, walking can get you where you need to go for free.
Make walking part of your travel routine one day per week to start saving, avoid traffic, feel healthier and help to make the Sunshine Coast Australia’s most sustainable region.

You don’t need to leave your car at home every day, just replacing one car trip a week can make a difference. Try these tips to make walking part of your weekly routine:
- Walk to school or work - If it's close enough, try walking instead of driving one day a week.
- Family walks – Enjoy the journey and quality time with the family by walking to the park, or your favourite café or restaurant on the weekends to avoid parking hassles.
- Walk and talk - Walking is a great way to catch up with friends by walking to a common spot for coffee or a catch-up. Park further away from work and organise a walk and talk with colleagues for your first or last meeting of the day

Plan your trip. Check out our Active Travel Maps to find a shared path near your home, school or workplace.
Share the path:
- Keep left. Walk on the left side so others can pass on the right, don’t spread across the path.
- Be aware. Look out for bikes, scooters, and runners.
- Listen carefully. Keep the sound on your headphones low or out of one ear so you can hear what’s happening around you.
- Be polite. Say "hello" or "excuse me" when passing someone.
- Pause off the path. Whether you are pausing to take in the sites, grabbing a drink of water or talking to a friend, step off the path to allow others to safely continue their journey.
- Keep dogs on a leash and on your left along busy pathways to avoid getting tangled with other pathway users.
Stay safe when crossing the road:
- Put down your phone and look both ways before crossing the road.
- Be visible. Wear bright clothes during the day and reflective gear if walking at night. Consider using a torch or smaller flashing lights that can be attached to clothing.
- Stay comfortable. Wear comfy shoes and carry water if it's hot outside.

They focus on identifying walking infrastructure within a 2km radius of key local spots like town centres, public transport, schools, shops and hospitals. The routes will guide future planning, design, and construction of our transport network.
