The Maroochy regional bushland botanic garden officially opened in December 2001 and continues to develop and adapt to meet the changing needs and expectations of the community.

'Growing' the gardens experience

Brochures, plant information signs, displays, workshop programs and bush walks are all regularly reviewed and upgraded to enhance and improve the visitor experience.

A partnership with the community

The Maroochy regional bushland botanic garden is one of council's ongoing community projects. Council staff work closely with the Friends of the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens Inc. to achieve the many objectives outlined in the garden’s management plan.

The friends, in partnership with council, were pivotal in the establishment of the garden. Now, they are involved in all aspects including funding, planning, construction, landscaping, planting and maintenance, and are represented on the garden's advisory board.

By successfully applying for grants, and attracting donations, fundraising and the involvement of other community organisations, the friends have funded the traffic bridge, toilet block, major planting, landscaping, picnic tables, seating, rock pool, lawns, sculptures, shelters and water features.

Activities the community may be involved in include: Lizzy the rescued koala.

To find out about joining the friends, visit the Friends of the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens Inc. website.

What's happening

Richmond birdwing butterfly arbour project

Over the coming year, the Friends of the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden Inc. will be constructing a new Richmond birdwing butterfly arbour. The arbour will provide both structure for newly planted Richmond birdwing butterfly vines but also an evocative visual stimulus and educational experience for the visitor.
