The Wave (Rail)
Connecting the Sunshine Coast for the future.

About the project
The Wave public transport initiative was announced by the Queensland Government in March 2025 as part of its 2032 Delivery Plan, which focuses on infrastructure for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
The Wave includes a heavy passenger rail line from Beerwah to Birtinya (Stages 1 and 2), connecting with a high-capacity, high-frequency metro-style service (Stage 3) from Birtinya to the Sunshine Coast Airport via Mountain Creek and Maroochydore CBD.
The Wave – Stages 1 and 2 (Rail) will deliver an upgraded Beerwah station and new stations at Bells Creek (Aura), Caloundra, Aroona and Birtinya.
The Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI) Upgrade is also critical to The Wave, improving connectivity, integrating the metro-style service and enabling future transport options.
Once operational, The Wave will provide the fastest and most reliable way for Sunshine Coast residents to travel to Moreton Bay, Brisbane and beyond, saving passengers over 45 minutes compared to driving in peak times.
The Australian and Queensland governments have jointly contributed funding to deliver Stage 1 (Beerwah to Caloundra), with the Queensland Government committing early works funding to Stage 2, Stage 3 and MRI Upgrade.
The project is being delivered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), with key local government assets returned to Sunshine Coast Council on completion.

While Council is supporting TMR in the delivery of The Wave project, Council is unable to comment on or respond to enquiries directly related to the project, including matters such as project status and funding. Enquiries should be directed to the relevant TMR contact details below.
Council will deliver a range of complementary projects in support of The Wave and will communicate with the community and affected areas in line with standard Council communication practices.
