International submarine cable
Connecting our region to the world
The Sunshine Coast is home to Queensland’s first direct international data connection. This project brings faster, more reliable internet to our region by linking us directly to global networks in Asia and the United States.
What is the international submarine cable?
The cable is part of a large system called the Japan-Guam-Australia South (JGA-S) network. It runs under the ocean and connects the Sunshine Coast to other countries. This means:
- Faster internet speeds
- More reliable connections
- Lower costs for data services
- New opportunities for business and jobs
The cable connects to the NEXTDC SC1 Data Centre in Maroochydore, which manages and stores data safely and quickly. It also helps local businesses, schools, hospitals and homes access better digital services.
You can learn more on the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network page.
First cable installation
The first cable was installed in December 2019 and became fully active in 2020. This was a big step forward for the Sunshine Coast. It helped:
- Create new jobs.
- Attract global tech companies.
- Improve internet access for homes and businesses.
- Support smart city projects across the region.
A second cable is coming – backed by Google
A second international cable is now being built. It’s called the Tabua cable, and it’s supported by Google and NEXTDC. This cable will connect Australia to Fiji and the United States.
Installation works will take place in October at Pierce Park and Pierce Park Carpark, Maroochydore.
As part of these works, the Pierce Park Carpark and sections of Pierce Park will be temporarily closed between 16 October 2025 - 7 November 2025.
During this time, areas will be fenced off and secure, with the necessary traffic and pedestrian controls in place. The construction activities are temporary, and the area will be restored once the work is complete.
The above dates are weather dependent and subject to change. Council will do its best to keep the impact on the community as minimal as possible.
The cable is expected to be ready by 2026 and will:
- Make internet even faster and more reliable.
- Help protect against outages.
- Support industries like health, finance, and technology.
- Make the Sunshine Coast a key location for global data.
Building for the future
To support these cables, Council has built a strong digital network across the region. This includes:
- 72km of underground conduits and 941 pits for cables.
- Smart poles with Wi-Fi, lighting and sensors.
- Smart signs and lighting in the city centre.
- Tools to help plan future smart infrastructure.
Council also offers a free service called Data Connect. This dynamic matchmaking service helps companies with large-scale data needs find the right local telco partners.
