Sunshine Coast Lightning netball team and Sunshine Coast Council partner to deliver the Indigenous Round during National Reconciliation Week (NRW).
The Indigenous Round aims to celebrate First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) culture within the sport and highlight the importance of participation and involvement out in the local communities.
This partnership, which commenced in 2018, includes the commission of an exclusive First Nations jersey for Sunshine Coast Lightning players to wear during the Indigenous Round and a special netball clinic for First Nations youth.
Sunshine Coast Lightning Indigenous Round hosts over 3,000 patrons, is nationally broadcast on Channel 9, and hosts an activation area at the front of the USC Stadium known as the Strike Zone.
The Strike Zone includes sponsor, tourism and community stalls, food and beverage stalls, First Nations traditional games, performers, and a Welcome to Country. There ae also cultural activities and corporate programming inside the stadium before and during the game, the:
- 2021 Indigenous Round Arts program was facilitated by First Nations artist Bridgette Chilli
- 2020 Indigenous Round jersey was designed by First Nations artist Hope O'Chin
- 2019 Indigenous Round jersey was designed by First Nations artist Lyndon Davis
- 2018 Indigenous Round jersey was designed by First Nations artist Kerry Neill.
