Last week, council and its community partners launched the Sunshine Coast Holiday Safety Campaign and this week, the holiday safety message has been uploaded to ‘YouTube’ in order to reach a wider audience.
Campaign spokesperson and division 6 Councillor, Christian Dickson, said that communicating the key message, ‘Make this season one to remember – not one to forget!’ through ‘YouTube’ will assist in sending a strong virtual and visual message to the Gen Y age group across the coast.
“Seventy five percent of recorded incidents for accidents, crime and public unrest last year on the Sunshine Coast came from the Gen Y age group, so it’s important we get creative and find ways to reach this target market with our safety messages,” Cr Dickson said.
“Using Web 2.0 tools such as ‘YouTube’ is an extremely cost effective and efficient way to send messages to our community, in particular, the Gen Y age group who use these tools every day.
“I fit into the Gen Y age group and I know that ‘YouTube’, Facebook, Myspace and other social networking sites, empowers the end user to receive information at home, at work and on the move. An added bonus is that our messages are delivered in an environmentally friendly way.”
“It’s exciting to be able to deliver our campaign messages this way, because the opportunities are endless and it’s a first for council too!” Cr Dickson said.
The Holiday Safety Campaign is an initiative of Sunshine Coast Regional Council and its community partners to drive home the message of safety over the summer holidays – wherever we are.
