Youth Drawn Together through public artworks

Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with The Old Ambulance Station Nambour, has delivered a series of striking public artworks in Beerwah and Caloundra.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said Council was successful in obtaining an Australian Government grant to run a public art and graffiti management project in Beerwah and Caloundra.

“The Drawn Together project was delivered by a team from The Old Ambulance Station Nambour who ran a program of art workshops for young people,” he said.

“In Beerwah the activities took place at the Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre and in the Beerwah Skate Park. The skate park has been revitalised with vibrant, youthful art work that creates a sense of pride and ownership for the young people that use the park.

“The program provided creative and mentoring opportunities for young people to get involved in legal street art processes and community events and activities.”

In Caloundra the walk from the Transit Centre to Lamkin Lane has been transformed by vibrant public art that depicts the heritage of Caloundra.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the art creations have created a visual link from the Caloundra Transit Centre to Lamkin Lane.

“The Drawn Together team has engaged with young people of Caloundra and given them opportunities to develop their skills in illustration in a positive way,” he said.

“The outcome is a series of striking nautical themed artworks for all the community to enjoy.”

The Old Ambulance Station Chair, Michael Doneman said a team of professional artists and arts workers facilitated the Drawn Together program on behalf of Sunshine Coast Council.

“Our project manager and artist facilitators all have years of experience delivering creative activities for young people.”

Old Ambulance Station, Nambour Project Coordinator, John Waldron said the Drawn Together project artists Adam Lewczuk, Dave Houghton and Ryan Sullivan mentored the young participants teaching them the application of street art techniques.

“The Drawn Together project was extremely successful with the young people learning how to work as a team and connecting with others while positively expressing themselves,” he said.
