Travel for free on NYE

If you’re heading to Mooloolaba this New Year’s Eve, you can avoid traffic congestion and travel for free thanks to Sunshine Coast Council and Translink.

The free Sunbus buses will operate on all routes from 3pm on New Year’s Eve (December 31).

If you need to drive part of the way, there will also be free park and ride services operating from Kawana Shoppingworld and Maroochydore Bus Station on Horton Parade from 3pm on December 31, 2017 terminating at 2am on January 1, 2018.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said providing free public transport on New Year’s Eve offered party goers a safe and convenient option to get to and from the festivities.

“With New Year’s Eve celebrations taking place across the Sunshine Coast, I encourage everyone to travel safely and take up the option of leaving the car at home and jumping on a free bus,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Providing the free buses will help to increase safety, convenience and manage traffic and parking in the area.”

There will also be free shuttle services to and from NYE Mooloolaba from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), departing every 30 minutes from 5pm to 8pm and back to USC again from 8:45pm to 2am.

In addition to the regular timetable, additional services will be added to routes 600, 620 from 6:30pm to 2am.

An additional 610 service from Maroochydore to Nambour will also be scheduled at 10pm and 1am.

Please note that intoxicated people or the carrying of alcohol will not be permitted on board any bus. Security will be present on bus services.

In an effort to minimise the event’s carbon footprint, council is banning helium balloons and disposable chemical glow products (battery operated LED products are acceptable), which may end up in landfill or waterways harming marine life.
