Tequila Mockingbird swoops into the Sunshine Coast

The shake & stir theatre co presents its award-winning Australian play Tequila Mockingbird for one performance only at council’s Lake Kawana Community Centre on Thursday, October 20 at 7.30pm.

Featuring the original stellar cast, including Barbara Lowing, Bryan Probets, Nelle Lee, Nick Skubij, Ross Balbuziente and Shannon Haegler, and directed by Michael Futcher Tequila Mockingbird visits themes of racial prejudice, the perversion of justice and the consequences of alcohol abuse, all in a uniquely Australian context.

Nominated for six Matilda Awards in 2014 and winner of Best Mainstage Production and three coveted Gold Matilda Awards, this is a bold, brave work examining a darker side of Australian culture lurking just below the surface which The Australian newspaper garnered “outstanding”.

After a woman is attacked in a remote Australian town, the racist underbelly rears its head as the community targets a young Indian doctor who had recently relocated to the area.

Only one local man possesses the strength to uncover the truth and defend the accused in the ultimate fight for what’s right, but first he must take care of other matters a little closer to home.

Artistic director of shake & stir Ross Balbuziente said Tequila Mockingbird is an important piece of Australian theatre.

“Tequila Mockingbird has been a cherished production for shake & stir since 2013. It commenced a dialogue with our audiences surrounding racial issues and we want it to be seen by more Australians, and given the terrifying recent increase in atrocities fuelled by discrimination – it’s more important than ever,” Mr Balbuziente said.

The production celebrates shake & stir’s award-winning team of Michael Futcher (Director), Josh McIntosh (Designer), Jason Glenwright (Lighting Designer) and Guy Webster (Sound Design) who were responsible for the company’s smash-hits productions of George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm.
