Take a ‘selfie’ during the Heritage Discovery Weekend and win!

Planes, trains, lighthouses, museums and more are waiting to be discovered during the Heritage Discovery Weekend on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1.

More than 15 fascinating museums and heritage places will be opening their doors over the weekend and there will be a lot to discover, including quirky collections, heritage listed buildings, tours, talks, entertainment and so much more.

To add to the weekend of fun, council is inviting everyone to take ‘selfies’ of their experiences and share them online to enter the Heritage Discovery Weekend photo competition with a chance to win two tickets to an event at council’s Lake Kawana Community Centre.

So for a great weekend of fun, organise a group, pack the camera and a picnic and head off to explore our fascinating museums and heritage places.

Heritage Film Festival

Saturday, April 30, 9.30am – 12.30pm, Nambour Library. Free.

Enjoy local history on film and celebrate the Heritage Discovery Weekend. View a selection of informative and entertaining films showing many aspects of Sunshine Coast history and early movies of the Nambour area. Morning tea will be provided.

Muller Park playground opening

Saturday April 30, 10.30 – 11.30am. Free.

Join in the official opening of the new playground at Muller Park which has been based on the animals and materials used in traditional day-to-day life by the Kabi Kabi people. Enjoy a traditional welcome, Indigenous storytelling, didgeridoo presentation and traditional fire lighting display.

Tours of heritage listed Bankfoot House

Sunday May 1, Bankfoot House, 10am – 3pm. Adults $5 and children free.

Step back in time as you discover Bankfoot House constructed in 1868. The home was a Cobb & Co stop on the way to the Gympie Goldfields and has a rich collection of objects and stories.

Visit heritage listed Landsborough Museum

Sunday May 1, Landsborough Museum, 9am – 2.30pm. Adults $5 and children free.

Find out more about Landsborough’s local heritage and help our Museum celebrate its 40th birthday. View the World War I exhibition, Far From This Land, about the experiences of the front line and the home front, told through the lives of four locals.

Visit some of Maleny’s heritage listed places

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 10am - 3pm: Maleny Pioneer Village. Gold coin donation.

Discover, visit and inspect some of Maleny’s heritage listed places. Open Weekend at the Village including a garage sale on Saturday. For tour bookings phone 0428 942 288.

Open house at Fairview (Pattemore House)

Saturday, April 30, Noon - 4pm. Adults $5 and children free.

Visit this charming 1907 Queensland farmhouse, built entirely from white beech, pit-sawn on the property.

Days of Sunshine Pop-up Museum

Saturday, April 30, Maroochydore Library, 9.30am – 4pm. Free.

Presented by Bli Bli on Maroochy Historical Society this one-day event highlights glass negatives, photographs, colour slides, movies, documents, and memorabilia to support the real-life stories handed down through the generations. Ask our local historians about our vibrant and diverse coastal heritage and bring along your own photos, heritage items and memorabilia to share your personal or family history.

Stalls, raffles and refreshments at Nambour Museum

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, 1 May. Nambour Museum 10am – 3pm. Adults $4 and children $1.

Explore the heritage of the local district, major industries such as sugar cane, telecommunications and health as well as many other facets of country life. There will be a special display featuring photographs, objects, and videos on the history of the locomotives that once worked at the Moreton Central Sugar Mill.

Take a guided tour along Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway

Saturday, April 30, Telco Road, Buderim, 2pm. Free.

The tramway was a lifeline to people on the Sunshine Coast before roads existed. Learn about tramway history with expert guides.

Visit heritage listed Buderim Pioneer Cottage

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, Buderim. 11am - 3pm. Free entry.

Pioneer Cottage is an original historic Buderim house built around 1882 and remains a piece of living history filled with heritage furniture, home wares, décor, photos, clothing and curios.

Take a tour of Caloundra Lighthouses

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, Caloundra 10am - 1pm. Gold coin donation.

Get the adrenaline pumping with a climb to the top of the 1896 lighthouse – the oldest surviving building in Caloundra – and enjoy the view of Kings Beach from the top.

Tour Peachester Cemetery with Peachester History Committee

Sunday, May 1, Peachester 3pm. Free.

Take a tour of the historically significant cemetery and learn about our local pioneers.

Kenilworth Museum

Sunday, May 1, Kenilworth 10am - 2pm. Adults $4. Children $1. Family $9.

Have a go operating the plug and cord telephone switchboard and see the working antique machines. Download the free Tour of the Township app and take an historical walk around the town.

Discover Eumundi

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, Eumundi 10am - 3pm. Free.

Learn about Eumundi early settlers and industries. Collection includes natural history and Indigenous artefacts from the region.

Kings Beach Pavilion

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, Caloundra 6am - 3pm. Free.

Step inside this heritage listed building built in 1937 that is now a popular café. Enjoy the heritage photo display.

Queensland Air Museum (QAM)

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, Caloundra 10am - 4pm. Adults $13 and children $7. Family just $30.

QAM houses an F-111, Australia’s oldest DC3, 20 aircraft and 90 aircraft engines.

Genealogy Sunshine Coast

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, Nambour 10am - 3pm. $10 Adults.

Explore a centre for researching family history, including local pioneers.

Yandina Historic House

Saturday, April 30and Sunday, May 1, Yandina 9.30am - 3pm. Free.

A lovely example of a hinterland homestead built in 1899, now a museum, information centre, craft shop, café and gallery.

Caloundra Family History

Saturday, April 30, Caloundra 9.30am – 12.30pm. Free.

A library staffed by experienced genealogists who can assist your family history research.

The Heritage Discovery Weekend is funded by the Sunshine Coast Council Cultural Heritage Levy which was introduced in 2009 to ensure the region’s stories, traditions and places continue to be protected and experienced by future generations.
