Sunshine Coast welcomes Divine Dvorak presented by Brisbane Symphony Orchestra

Internationally renowned cellist Patrick Murphy joins Brisbane Symphony Orchestra for one performance only of the beautiful cello concerto Divine Dvorak on Sunday, at 3pm on November 19 at Lake Kawana Community Centre.

As the story goes, homesick and lonely, Czech composer Dvorak poured into this moving concerto grief for his first love, Josefina, who was gravely ill. She died before he could return from New York to Bohemia. The tender second movement quotes one of his own early melodies, a favourite of Josefina’s.  This very personal work is nevertheless, as with all Dvorak’s music, intensely national in tone with Bohemian rhythms and melodies.

Waltz by the orchestra’s own resident composer, Matthew Hoey.  Matthew has composed a number of pieces and Waltz shows once again his mastery of touch and timing.  Since it starts in 4/4 (rather than waltz time of 3/4) it may be rather difficult for the audience to leap to its feet in a waltz, but they are very welcome to.

This event is not-to-be missed with the appearance of Patrick Murphy who is the Cello Performance Fellow at the School of Music, University of Queensland, and is a member of UQ's Ensemble in Residence, the White Halo Ensemble.  Patrick has had a distinguished career both in Australia and internationally, both as a chamber musician and a soloist. His love of cello is not limited to performance, however, and he has commissioned and premiered new works for solo cello by Australian composers including Paul Dean and James Ledger.
