We did it – twice in a row!

Sunshine Coast Airport has again been awarded Australian Major Airport of the Year for the second time in a row at the 2012 Australian Airports Association Annual Convention in Melbourne.

The council-owned airport was the recipient of the Major Airport award in 2011.

Speaking from Melbourne last night, Airport General Manager Peter Pallot said the work put in to develop the airport’s international flight credentials was a major factor in winning the award.

"To the best of my knowledge, no regional airport has ever won this award twice in a row," he said.

"This is a fantastic result, reflecting the massive effort airport staff, backed by Sunshine Coast Council, put in during 2012.

"The introduction of Air New Zealand flights from Auckland to the Sunshine Coast was a major factor in our nomination for this award for the second time.

"The achievement is further confirmed by the great news that Auckland Airport has just won the equivalent Airport of the Year award in New Zealand. My congratulations go to Auckland Airport CEO Adrian Littlewood and the rest of the team."

Mr Pallot said his team was working hard in its bid to secure a second season of winter flights into the Sunshine Coast in partnership with Air New Zealand and its code-share partner Virgin Australia.

Mayor Mark Jamieson congratulated Mr Pallot and the entire airport staff.

"Sunshine Coast Airport is intrinsic to our economic sustainability and the last year has seen Peter and his team work hard in improving and expanding services despite difficult conditions in the industry," he said.

"Securing the Air New Zealand flights was a great coup this year and we are keen not only to host them again in 2013, but hopefully introducing other flights as time goes on.

"The flights injected a $14.5 million boost to the Sunshine Coast in a very timely manner.

"As we move towards building a new runway for the airport we are still talking to stakeholders in the fly in-fly out market to garner our share of that market."

Winning airports in other categories included Ballarat, Learmonth, Melbourne, Alice Springs and Darwin.
