Registrations are now open, and Sunshine Coast schools are encouraged to nominate and support new students who are ready to develop their leadership potential.

Part of the Mayor's Telstra Innovation Masterclass Series, Future Leaders – IMPACT offers a dynamic, hands-on experience where students will strengthen their confidence, leadership capability and ability to make a positive impact in their schools and communities.

Building on the success of the series, participants in previous masterclasses reported a 28 per cent increase in self-rated leadership confidence following the full-day program — highlighting the strong outcomes for young people who take part.

The 2026 Series continues to provide practical, industry-led learning experiences that equip students with the skills and mindset needed for future success.

While students who attended Masterclass One are welcome to continue their journey, Future Leaders – IMPACT is designed as a stand-alone opportunity — making it an ideal entry point for new participants ready to step into leadership.

The Mayor's Telstra Innovation Masterclass Series supports the Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy by fostering youth development and innovation, helping to build the talent and skills needed for the future.

Results that speak for themselves

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the outcomes from Masterclass One reinforced why Council had committed to the program.

"The numbers show our investment is building confidence and competence in tomorrow's leaders," Mayor Natoli said.

“Seeing students leave with the tools and the confidence to apply what they’ve learned, taking initiative, leading others, and acting on new ideas, is exactly what this program is designed to do.”

Ninety-five students from 18 Sunshine Coast secondary schools attended Masterclass One on 29 April 2026 at Altitude Nine in Sunshine Coast City Hall. Event surveys measured  eight leadership competencies, and the results showed improvement between 16 and 27 percentage points, on every measure, in a single day.

Students who participated reflected on what the experience meant to them:

"It doesn't take an extraordinary person to do extraordinary things. Discomfort grows confidence."  — Rebecca, Masterclass One student

"I now realise that leadership is about being the voice for other people."  — Sienna G, Masterclass One student

"Today's session went way past my expectations and helped me become a better leader."  — Harrison K, Masterclass One student

Delivered as a partnership between Council, Telstra and Study Sunshine Coast, the Masterclass Series will connect students with leaders from innovative and emerging sectors through targeted sessions covering:

  • Leadership development
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Industry insights and real-world problem solving

Students will have the opportunity to explore big ideas, collaborate with peers from across the region and gain valuable skills that support their future pathways. They will also get an opportunity to meet the Mayor.

Telstra Regional Engagement Manager Matthew Thornton said Masterclass Two is an ideal opportunity for students who are ready to step into leadership and grow their skills.

"We know the Sunshine Coast is home to extraordinary young talent – and this program helps unlock it. Masterclass Two gives students the chance to take what they have learned and start making a real difference, Mr Thornton said."

Speaking from experience

Masterclass Two will once again be facilitated by Lachie Smart – world record-setting pilot, acclaimed youth leadership speaker and Chief Operating Officer of The End Game.

At just 18, Lachie became the youngest person ever to fly solo around the world in a single‑engine aircraft, an achievement that continues to inspire young people globally. Today, he is recognised as one of Australia’s most dynamic emerging leadership educators, working with schools, businesses and organisations to help people unlock their potential.

Mr Smart said the students who attended Masterclass One blew him away with their engagement and ambition.

“Masterclass Two will give new and returning students the tools to channel their ideas and energy into leadership and real-world impact – I cannot wait to see what they achieve,” Mr Smart said.
