Step up to the White Ribbon Day photo booth and take the oath against domestic violence

To launch White Ribbon Day, Mayor Mark Jamieson today (November 22) joined Queensland Police Service and local White Ribbon committee members to send a clear message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated in our Sunshine Coast community.

White Ribbon Day on November 25 is an internationally recognised day of action, and calls upon all Australians to stand up, speak out and act to stop men’s violence and abuse against women.

This year, the Sunshine Coast community is invited to take the oath against domestic violence and step up to a White Ribbon Day photo booth in Ocean Street, Maroochydore from 7.30pm to midnight on Friday, November 24 and Loo with a View at Mooloolaba from 2.30 to 6pm on Saturday, November 25.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said Sunshine Coast Council would continue to work alongside local law enforcement agencies and community organisations to say NO to domestic violence.

“Council will continue to be front and centre leading campaigns such as White Ribbon Day to say enough is enough,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“As a White Ribbon Ambassador, I recognise the importance of men taking responsibility and being part of the solution to end the violence, abuse and inequality faced by women across Australia.

“I will be stepping up to one of our White Ribbon Day photo booths to take the oath and pledge to stop domestic and family violence in our community and support cultural change.

“I urge the community to join me as together we must put an end to domestic violence against women and children in our community.”

Queensland Police Service Acting Deputy Commissioner Darryl Johnson, who is the Sunshine Coast White Ribbon Committee chair, said White Ribbon Day aimed to create an Australian society where women and girls can live in safety, free from violence and abuse.

“This month, the Sunshine Coast White Ribbon Committee, council and the community will come together to take a stand and take an oath against domestic violence,” he said.

“As community leaders who care about the women and children in our lives, we can take responsibility to help ensure that women and children live free from fear and violence.”
