The next round of council’s free cycling workshops start this month to encourage residents to add two wheels to their daily routines.

Research from Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads shows four out of 10 Queenslanders own a bike and more than half of all Queenslanders have a bike in working order in their household[1].

Transport Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the workshops were designed to get more people outdoors on the bikes to enjoy the great lifestyle available on the Sunshine Coast.

“We’d love to see the cobwebs brushed off the many bikes sitting idle in many of our garages and using our fantastic growing cycle path network,” Cr Baberowski said.

“We’re all guilty of getting into our cars for those short trips up the road and maybe it’s simply because we’ve lost the habit or our confidence on a two-wheeler.

”This year why not register yourself or the whole family for one of our great workshops and refresh your skills and be confident to meander along our extensive network including our new separated bikeway at Mooloolaba.”

The Start Cycling, Stay Cycling series is run by accredited instructors and includes:

  • Basic Cycling Skills for Female Riders, teaches handling and technique such as gearing, cornering, road rules and etiquette
  • Sunday Social Pathway Rides, provide an enjoyable way to meet new people while learning pathway etiquette, new skills and routes with some of the best views on the coast
  • Children’s Intermediate Cycling Course, is designed for children aged six and over and includes bike handling skills, road and path awareness and must be accompanied by an adult. Scheduled again for April school holidays
  • Progression from Training Wheels, includes strategies for parents to teach their children to get up and riding on two wheels. Scheduled for April school holidays.

For dates and online registration, search “cycling workshops” on our website.

Bookings essential and participants are asked to bring their own bike and helmet.
