Mayor Bob Abbot said council’s service delivery committee has reassessed its involvement in Schoolies Week and today concluded that Council should no longer have the lead role in the management of the Sunshine Coast Schoolies Taskforce.
“Lower numbers to events, increased costs of operating events and rising cost of public liability insurance are the contributing factors,” Cr Abbot said.
Cr Abbot said there are more effective ways for council to engage with the local youth of the region.
“Resources previously invested in Schoolies Week can be freed up and in turn directed towards alternate programs and events for the region’s youth, such as Wanna Be Deadly, SCRUFFFY, Shout Out Loud, Holiday Blast, music festivals and a variety of other youth programs,” he said.
Members of the Schoolies Taskforce will be invited to join discussions around future youth activities and events, specifically about safety programs during peak holiday periods such as Schoolies Week.
“The safety of our youth, including young people visiting the Sunshine Coast, is paramount and measures will continue through our existing community safety programs,” Cr Abbot said.
