Supporting our Division 1 communities

Almost $7 million will be invested in Sunshine Coast Council’s Division 1 projects in 2020/21 to support our community and ensure it continues to flourish.

Divisional councillor Rick Baberowski said in developing council’s 2020/21 budget, every element of community and economic rehabilitation had been considered, from community group resilience to economic and environmental initiatives to help our healthy, smart and creative Sunshine Coast to thrive.

“To deal with the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, council has deliberately kept investment high and will roll out a $242.3 million capital works program across the Sunshine Coast region,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The resulting economic impact of our investment is estimated to be around $300 million.

“Over the next 12 months, a greater focus has been placed on projects that enhance community connectivity including the Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan project which will see Cribb Street increasingly transformed to a more functional, stronger destination offering an inviting place for our residents and visitors to meet, eat, shop and connect in this remarkable historic township.

“Council will also continue road, pathway and park network upgrades.

“Throughout Division 1, we’re making great progress on building a network of parks in addition to continuously improving our road network. In particular we’ll see an upgrade package that includes major works to Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough and Johnston Road, Glass House.”

Cr Baberowski said investment in the Caloundra West region would include upgrades to Caloundra Aerodrome and construction of another sports clubhouse in Aura.

“To improve safety, runway lighting at Caloundra Aerodrome will be replaced and we’ll see improved connectivity with construction of a link crossover from the aerodrome to the museum.

“Construction will start on a new district level clubhouse facility for the rapidly emerging suburb of Nirimba within the Caloundra South District.

“This much anticipated community facility will provide sport and recreation opportunities for netball and rugby league in this fast growing region.”

Cr Baberowski said council continued to invest in projects which encouraged our residents to stay healthy and this year’s planned pathway, track and park upgrades throughout Division 1 would increase opportunities for the community to enjoy the outdoors.

“From the Caloundra Road pathway renewal to Glass House Mountains Regional Trail upgrades and way-finding signage, as well as various park and playground upgrades, including Clearview Park in Glass House Mountains, Beerwah’s Turner Park, Peace Memorial Park at Landsborough and Little Mountain Common Playground, the community and children of all ages will have even more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and live an active and healthy lifestyle.

“We’ll also formally start planning for a Glass House Mountains to Beerwah off-road cycle path, which will assist in our push for what would be an outstanding connection between two key communities and potentially become an excellent drawcard for cycling tourism.”

Council delivered its $782 million budget on June 25.

Division 1 2020-21 Budget highlights include:

• $1.33 million for the Cribb Street Streetscape, Landsborough
• $785,000 for Tunnel Ridge Road BlackSpot Hazard Removal, Landsborough
• $540,000 Caloundra South District Sports Park
• $350,000 for the Caloundra Aerodrome runway lighting and link crossover
• $271,000 to upgrade Johnston Road, Glass House
• $145,000 Caloundra Road pathway renewal, Caloundra
• $112,090 for investigation and planning for the Glass House Mountains to Beerwah off-road cycle path
• Various playground upgrades, including $50,000 at Clearview Park, Glass House, $35,000 at Peace Memorial Park, Landsborough and $30,000 at Little Mountain Common Playground
• $50,000 for Glass House Mountains Regional Trail upgrades and way-finding
• $50,000 for Stage 5 Turner Park upgrade.
