Safer streets in Mooloolaba for residents and visitors

Speeds along a number of streets in Mooloolaba will be reduced and safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists increased with the introduction of a special speed area from this month.

The speed limit on 11 streets will be lowered from 50km/h to 40km/h, while the speed limit on the main traffic route through Mooloolaba, including parts of Brisbane Rd, Walan St, Venning St and Mooloolaba Esplanade will be cut from 60km/h to 50km/h.

Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said he was pleased the changes could be introduced to show the community that council joined them in their concern for road user and pedestrian safety in the area.

“There has been a number of local crashes recorded since 2010 and I have had numerous requests from residents concerned over poor driving behaviours and speeding in the area,” Cr Connolly said.

“After consulting with a number of local community groups, and with the endorsement of the local Speed Management Committee, I requested council traffic officers reduce the speed limit in Mooloolaba due to the high number of pedestrians and traffic volumes in this prime tourism area.

“Lower speeds improve road safety and it will also improve the comfort and enjoyment for residents and businesses adjacent to these roads as lower speeds generally reduces road noise.

“We know Mooloolaba is a highly desirable destination with world-class beaches, great eateries and fantastic accommodation.

“This also brings high volumes of traffic and pedestrians to the area especially on weekends and school holidays.

“I am committed to making Mooloolaba the best destination for residents and visitors, and I’m glad to see my request for speed limits to be lowered has been adopted and actioned.

“These speed reductions support the Mooloolaba Master Plan to make the area more pedestrian friendly and safe.

“I’ve also asked for a review of the road network to determine if any improvements to traffic flow around Mooloolaba can be achieved in the future.”

Council has installed 13 new speed signs, updated four existing speed signs, added four pavement markings and erected temporary electronic roadside signs for extra visibility for the first month of the reduced speed limits.

Arterial Roads1 reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h

Brisbane Road from the Foote Street roundabout to Walan Street, Walan Street, Venning Street and Mooloolaba Esplanade up to Buderim Avenue.

[1] 2014 Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme These roads are considered arterial roads as they have a higher level of traffic infrastructure including traffic signals, sections with concrete medians, and both centre and edge line marking. As these roads have a higher functionality and higher volume of traffic, it was determined that the appropriate speed is 50km/hr.
