Relief in sight for climbers at popular trail

Sunshine Coast residents and visitors will soon benefit from long‑awaited public amenities at one of the region’s most popular natural attractions.

Construction of the new Mount Coolum facilities, located beside the carpark at the base of the mountain, began on Monday 2 March. 

The project will deliver a modular amenities block featuring a unisex Persons with Disability (PWD) toilet and three unisex ambulant cubicles, providing much‑needed convenience for the thousands who walk the Mount Coolum National Park track each month.

Division 8 Councillor Taylor Bunnag said the project was a major win for locals and visitors. 

“As someone who loves climbing Mount Coolum with my family, I know firsthand how challenging it can be when nature calls and the nearest public toilets are 2km away at Birrahl Park,” Cr Bunnag said. 

“That’s why I’m so pleased to see this much‑needed project progressing. 

“After strong advocacy to the State Government, we’ve been able to join forces to bring this facility to life.  

“My sincere thanks go to the State Government for their support.” 

Works are scheduled between 7am and 5pm daily and are expected to be completed by mid‑May 2026, weather and site conditions permitting. 

A small number of parking bays may be temporarily unavailable, and dust and noise mitigation measures will be used to reduce disruption wherever possible.  

“As with any construction, there will be some short-term disruption, and I know the project team will work hard to minimise any impacts,” Cr Bunnag said. 

“We’re pleased to be able to provide amenities here so the thousands of people who visit to enjoy nature can also answer nature’s call comfortably! 

“You’ve held on long enough and I want to thank residents for their patience and understanding throughout the construction phase and I look forward to the finished amenities. 

“I’m grateful to the State Government for their ongoing support in delivering this project.” 

Sunshine Coast Council is investing $50,000 and partnering with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, which is providing $425,000 to design and construct the new amenities block. 

Improved safety and comfort 

The prefabricated amenities block has been designed to improve security and safety for visitors to the park. 

The amenities block will be open and accessible and is designed to help people feel safe while using the facilities. 

It will also be powered sustainably by its own solar system. 

Mount Coolum National Park landscaping and signage

Mount Coolum walking trails are midway between Noosa and Caloundra, with the David Low Way providing access to the park.  

The car park entrance is near the junction of Tanah Street West and Jarnahill Drive, Mount Coolum. 

The Mount Coolum summit walk (1.6km return) is a Grade 4 walking track suitable for fit walkers only – the summit is 208m above sea level.
