Prominent viewing platform marks Maroochydore Beach entrance

A new viewing platform and stairs have changed the face of the Maroochydore Beach foreshore, providing a welcoming entrance statement to one of the Coast’s most popular beaches.

Division 8 Councillor Jason OPray joined members of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club and the community to officially open the platform today.

Cr OPray said the $695,000 upgrade by Sunshine Coast Council included a wider space, customised furniture and improved lighting.

“The entire project has totally changed the look and feel of the area and improved access to the beach,” Cr OPray said.

“It’s an outstanding design and a beacon for the beach.

“There’s custom furniture, balustrades, lighting and seating walls, which all transform this incredibly popular part of the Coast.

“I know anyone who visits Maroochydore Beach will be excited to see what a difference this upgrade makes.”

Cr OPray, also portfolio councillor for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, said the viewing platform had been completed in time for Maroochydore to jointly host the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships with Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba in 2016.

“The wider foreshore means more people will be able to watch the Aussies events at Maroochydore when competitors and visitors from around Australia descend on the Sunshine Coast next year,” he said.

“This impressive piece of infrastructure will be seen by people from around Australia.

“It’s important we have great facilities in place for those involved in the Aussies, but this upgrade will also be a major improvement for locals well into the future.

“This project is delivered as part of council’s $183 million Capital Works Program, which is a major investment in infrastructure and facilities for the Sunshine Coast community.”
