Planning and Environment Court approve Coolum service station

The Planning and Environment Court has recently decided an appeal against Sunshine Coast Council’s refusal of a service station at Coolum and approved a service station.

Plans for a service station at 150-156 Yandina-Coolum Road were rejected by council on 22 September 2017 on the basis that it did not comply with the provisions of the planning scheme.

Following the refusal, an appeal was filed by the applicant with the Planning and Environment Court.

Division 9 Councillor Stephen Robinson said he was disappointed.

“Safety for students and pedestrians, particularly with the proximity to the school, was council’s principal concern,” Cr Robinson said.

“These concerns were shared by local residents with many indicating that they considered such a proposal as unacceptable.

“As part of the appeal process, Planning and Environment Court traffic experts were engaged to report to the court on the suitability of the proposal and considered the proposal against the Australian Standards.

“Amendments have now been made to finalise the proposal, which will assist with complying with traffic and safety standards.

”While the court’s ruling is now final, this decision is based on the recommendations of independent traffic experts assessing the proposal against the Australian Standards.

“The decision will see part of the existing local shopping complex redeveloped into a service station.

“I would like to thank the local residents and council officers for their efforts in this matter.”
