Cr Blumel turned the first sod today on the 1.3km extension to the Coastal bikeway network at Mudjimba.

Council will start construction from 27 April on the three-metre wide footpath/cycle way along the eastern side of Ocean Drive, Mudjimba.

When complete, this $880,000 to the network will connect the existing coastal cycle network between Cottonwood St, Mudjimba and at North Shore Road, Twin Waters.

Cr Blumel said that this is an important step in encouraging physical activity and benefiting the health and wellbeing of Sunshine Coast people.

“This is great news for walkers and cyclists who can enjoy a safe and enjoyable commute along this beautiful stretch of coastline,” Cr Blumel said.

“Thorough environmental impact assessments were completed for the site and council has chosen to divert the pathway around significant trees rather than removing them.

“This is a great outcome in my view. It is very important to the people that I represent to progress with important infrastructure links while preserving our natural environment.

“Council’s bushland services team will move in behind the construction workers to revegetate the area with native plants and mulch.”

The project is funded jointly by Council and the Queensland Transport, South East Queensland Cycle Network Program.

Council will undertake the works in three stages starting from the intersection of North Shore road, progressing north.

Construction will take approximately three months, weather depending.
