National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.
Now in its 17th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant and fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book that explores age appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Grades 1 to 6.
This year the National Simultaneous Storytime book is The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.
Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said more than 520,000 children at over 3500 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime in 2016 and enjoyed a range of supporting educational songs, games, dress ups and loads of fun.
“We’re looking forward to seeing plenty of Coast kids reading The Cow Tripped Over the Moon at the same time as everyone else around the country,” Cr McKay said.
“This annual event reinforces the State Government funded First 5 Forever initiative which encourages parents and caregivers to talk, read, sing and play with their child every day.”
About the author Tony Wilson is an author and broadcaster who has been writing books for children for more than a decade.
In 2016, the bestselling The Cow Tripped Over the Moon soared to 2016 CBCA Honour Book status, and other titles such as Grannysaurus Rex, Harry Highpants, The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas, The Emperor’s New Clothes Horse, and Emo the Emu are also favourites.
