Meet Australian journalism icon Maxine McKew

Sunshine Coast here is your chance to meet one of Australia’s most influential women, acclaimed Australian journalist, politician and author Maxine McKew, at council’s Maroochydore Library from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday, August 30.

Maxine’s background in journalism made her a familiar face on the ABC where she was anchor of prestigious programs such as Lateline and the 7.30 Report.

Her work has been recognised by her peers and she has received both a Logie and a coveted Walkey journalism award.

Maxine left broadcasting and made the switch to politics, she wrote herself into the history books by defeating Prime Minister John Howard in the Sydney seat of Bennelong.

In government, she was parliamentary secretary for early childhood and later for infrastructure and local government.

Her book, Tales from the Political Trenches, tells the story of McKew’s triumph over John Howard and of her time as a parliamentary secretary in the tumultuous Rudd/Gillard Labor governments.

Her insider’s account of public policy is a must read for those interested in the inner wheels of democracy.

You are invited to hear Maxine speak about her extraordinary life in the public eye. Joining her as special guest MC is popular ABC Sunshine Coast presenter Jon Coghill.

This special literary event is part of the 10-day Horizon Festival of Arts and Culture from August 25 to September 3, featuring more than 200 events in visual art, music, spoken word, performance, comedy, dance and theatre.

Sunshine Coast Libraries’ author events are regularly hosted at various locations across the region.

Maxine’s books will be available for purchase on the night.

This evening is not-to-be-missed with live entertainment by talented local musician Rachel Ellen.

Light refreshments will be available with Friends of Maroochydore Library providing a cash wine bar.
