Do you walk or ride a bike to get around your neighbourhood? Do you travel using a wheelchair? That’s called active transport!

Sunshine Coast Council is updating its Draft Active Transport Plan to better meet the needs of our community and our growing population.

It sets out steps to make it easier and safer for our community to use active transport.

The draft Plan has been shaped by community feedback and aligns with Council’s vision to be recognised as Australia’s most sustainable region: Connected. Livable. Thriving.

Managing for Growth Portfolio Councillor Winston Johnston said the Plan aimed to create a more livable, healthy, safe and connected region.

“We are asking the community for feedback to ensure we’ve got it right,” Cr Johnston said.

“We want to know if we have heard you correctly and developed actions that support you to walk, ride or wheel more in your local area.

“More people are choosing to live, work and enjoy life here on the Sunshine Coast–and who can blame them?

“But as our population grows, we want the Sunshine Coast to be a place where getting from A to B is simple, safe and easy–whether you’re walking, riding a bike or using a mobility aid like a wheelchair.”

Accessible future

Council is working to make our active transport network more inclusive and is committed to making walking, riding and wheeling a real option for people of all ages, genders and abilities to get around.

Managing for Growth Portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson said Council was focused on improving active transport pathways and facilities such as end of trip bike racks.

“Active transport can reduce congestion, is low-cost and a safe way to travel which has flow on benefits for your health and hip-pocket,” Cr Dickson said.

“When more people choose to walk, ride or wheel, our whole region benefits socially, economically and environmentally.

“I encourage everyone in our community to get involved and explore better ways to move around their neighbourhood.”
