LDMG on ‘alert’ as Sunshine Coast prepares for heavy rainfall

The Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has moved to ‘alert’ status as the Bureau of Meteorology warns of heavy rain and strong winds on Friday.

LDMG Coordinator Andrew Ryan said the current weather system had the potential to create heavy rainfall and localised flooding.

“An upper low pressure system and the development of an east coast low north of Fraser could bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Sunshine Coast tomorrow,” Mr Ryan said.

“This weather system is still developing, but we expect to see heavy rainfall and localised flooding on the Coast.

“We don’t know exact locations and times for these heavy falls, so we urge all residents to be prepared.

“The Bureau of Meteorology is keeping a very close eye on this particular weather event, and as a precaution the LDMG is moving to a higher level of activation and awareness.

“Moving to ‘alert’ status ensures we’re as prepared as possible should this weather event become very significant. It’s better to be aware and prepared.

“We always prepare for the worst, but hope for the best and for minimal impact when severe weather comes our way.

“Council and emergency services are prepared and we ask our community to do the same.

“We encourage people to visit Council’s Disaster Hub website ( www.disaster.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) – a one stop shop for all disaster information, including road closures, weather conditions, emergency warnings and community advice messages issued during a weather event.

“People should also tune in to the local radio stations for weather forecasts and emergency warnings or advice.”
