The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Run Festival continues to attract visitors from around the world and the third annual event, on this Sunday 31 August, will draw runners from over 10 countries.

Mayor Mark Jamieson, who will present awards for the half marathon on Sunday, said council had seen great potential in the marathon when it began in 2011.

“It’s great to see the marathon go from strength to strength – council’s sponsorship of this event is proving a great investment for our region,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“It’s just one of many major events council sponsors, all of which attract visitors to the region and provide a boost for our local economy.

“This financial year, every dollar council invests in event sponsorship from the Tourism and Major Events Levy will generate an estimated $40 in economic returns.”

Tourism, Sport and Economic Development portfolio councillor Jason OPray said the homegrown event provided an opportunity for the community to come together.

“There’s something for everyone, from the full and half marathons right through to the 2km run and the ‘Onsie Runsie’, which is a good laugh for anyone involved,” Cr OPray said.

“The marathon creates a great community atmosphere – so many people come along to cheer on the runners, and local businesses embrace the visitors.

“Council is working hard to secure events like this and as we do, the Sunshine Coast region’s reputation as a world-class major events host continues to grow – the marathon really helps to build that status.

Cr OPray will be at the marathon to cheer on his family who are participating in the 2km run.
