KnitFest 2018 is on this weekend (June 30 to July 1), bringing a colourful celebration of knitting and fibre arts to Maleny and putting the Sunshine Coast Hinterland region on the crafting world stage.

The festival will feature 30 workshops and presentations, 60 trade stalls, entertainment and guest speakers, and is sure to engage and educate crafty beginners through to skilled artisans.

Festival and Creative Director Deb Swain said KnitFest was a magical festival which attracted attendees from across the world.

“KnitFest is a unique festival and probably the only type of its kind in Australia,” Ms Swain said.

“We’re anticipating 8000 attendees over the two days, a large contingent of whom are coming from outside our region.

“We also have many international visitors from Japan, Russia, England and New Zealand, where knitting and crafting is very popular, and who are visiting Australia just for this festival.

“Many international craft festivals have also contacted us, wanting us to share inspiration and insights from our event.

“In the lead up to the festival, Maple Street at Maleny will be yarn bombed with many local businesses receiving the knitted treatment.

“KnitFest this year features competitions for community groups, art associations and skilled artisans to decorate trees in our beautiful streetscapes.

“There is also a children’s treasure hunt through town, lunchtime entertainment, an alpaca fleece show and a stargazing evening.

“Visitors to Maleny can grab a window seat and ride the free yarn bombed bus as it travels up and down the festival precinct, to see all of the best yarn bombed attractions.

“Ladies, you’ll be pleased to know there are husband minding facilities this year, with Maleny Golf Course offering nine holes for just $19 on Saturday.”

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said KnitFest was another great lifestyle event hosted in the Hinterland region.

“KnitFest is sure to bring warmth to what will be a fantastic winter weekend for the Hinterland,” Cr McKay said.

“It is also a great event which showcases Maleny and the Hinterland to our out of region and international visitors.

“KnitFest has grown in size over the past couple of years and council is pleased to support its ongoing success.”
