For something a bit different, check out the upcoming The Twin Scapes Pinhole Photography exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery from 9 March to 10 April 2011.

The Twin Scapes is a photographic response to the overwhelming wave of digital technology sweeping the world.

Through a fascination of pinhole photography as the most basic means of producing an image directly on to paper, without lens or film, Japan and Australia are featured through the eyes of a Japanese photographer, Hideharu Matsuhisa.

Hideharu used natural light at its highest and lowest levels resulting in an intense play on shadows and shade to depict differences in history, culture and sensitivities.

As part of the official opening of the exhibition on Saturday 12 March at 2pm at the gallery, there will be a Japanese taiko drumming performance by the Batari Contemporary Taiko Ensemble.

For those wanting to enjoy the full Japanese taiko drumming experience, why not book into the workshop taking place at the gallery from 12.30 until 1.30pm on Saturday 12 March, preceding the exhibition opening.

The Taiko Drumming Workshop will be run by Motoyuki Niwa, a Sunshine Coast local and experienced taiko drummer.

Taiko is a traditional drum which was originally used in ritual and festive occasions in Japan.

The workshop introduces the unusual history of the taiko drum, various basic drumming techniques, and the importance of posture and hands gestures.
