Dig in and give back on National Tree Day
Sunshine Coast residents can take part in Australia’s biggest community tree planting event by planting trees for our local wildlife this Sunday (July 30).
Each year, more than 300,000 people take part in National Tree Day events at 3000 sites organised by councils, schools, businesses, communities and Toyota Dealers across the country.
Sunshine Coast Council has teamed up with Planet Ark to host two community tree planting events on Sunday - at Little Mountain from 8.30am–noon and Coolum Beach (Cinnamon Avenue Park, Cinnamon Avenue) 8am-11.30am.
Division 3 Councillor Peter Cox encouraged people to dig in and enjoy a range of family-friendly activities.
“In addition to tree planting, each site offers a range of extras such as, free BBQ, live music and face painting,” Cr Cox said.
“We’re expecting thousands of trees to be planted this weekend to celebrate National Tree Planting Day.
“It’s a fantastic way to get in touch with nature and I look forward to joining our local community and getting my hands dirty for a great cause.”
Division 9 Councillor Steven Robinson said plantings at the Coolum Beach site would provide a greater riparian buffer along Stumers Creek and enhance the area’s habitat and biodiversity values.
“It’s a terrific way to recharge your batteries in the great outdoors and to help restore our natural environment,” Cr Robinson said.
