Sunshine Coast Council is one step closer to considering the future of buildings at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, with the first stage of community consultation complete and the project expected on the agenda of a council meeting in coming months.

Council received 89 letters and emails during the consultation period and around 170 people attended 10 meetings and five drop-in sessions held in Maleny.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said councillors would consider all feedback before deciding which direction the upgrade would take.

“We asked the community to comment on a number of upgrade options identified in the feasibility study,” said Cr McKay.

“While opinions were divided, many people agree an upgrade of some kind does need to occur and the current charm of the reserve should remain.

“I agree with most of the feedback— it’s vital the rainforest is protected, the buildings don’t extend beyond the current built footprint and the beautiful view remains for everyone to enjoy.

“The ‘look and feel’ of the precinct is also a priority for the community and council but we are currently focused on the function of the upgrade—that’s the outcome we will get when this project goes to an Ordinary Meeting.

“All feedback will be considered at the design stage and it’s great people are keen to have input into the design.

“I want to thank everyone that attended the various meetings provided feedback.

“I visited the Reserve with Mayor Mark Jamieson and other councillors in January so they could see first-hand the current condition of the buildings and speak to the volunteers about their needs before a decision is made.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I want to congratulate the volunteers for their ongoing hard work.”
