There are exciting times ahead following the launch of the Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival at Coolum last week. The festival launch highlighted incredible talents ranging from international and regional authors, poets, singer/songwriters and Aboriginal heritage presentations. It was a terrific preview of what’s to come on September 9-11.

This is going to be one of the region’s most entertaining and informative events for anyone interested in the creative side of life. With events held at seven venues around Coolum, it is sure to bring a fantastic energy and vibrancy to town.  I encourage everyone to visit the festival’s website or Facebook page for further information and tickets.

A young inspiration

As the councillor responsible for aviation matters, I had the privilege of attending Lachlan Smart's farewell ceremony just before he commenced his solo flight around the world. Lachlan, a Sunshine Coast local, is aiming to become the youngest person to fly solo around the world in a single engine aircraft. The journey will cover almost 24,000 nautical miles and cross 20 countries on five continents, all before he turns 19. Lachlan is undertaking this mission to spread a message of achieving high goals through adversity and show that there are no limiting factors to what a person can achieve. He is certainly an inspiration for young people in our region. I hope you can all join with me in wishing him a safe and successful journey.
