Traffic accidents, ongoing congestion and safety concerns have prompted Sunshine Coast Council to close an intersection on Mountain Creek’s Karawatha Drive.

Divisional councillor Christian Dickson said a review of the intersection, at Satinay Street, was identified as critical by the Queensland Police Service.

“Council reviewed this intersection at the request of the Queensland Police Service and we identified that the centre median needed to be closed to traffic due to safety concerns,” Councillor Dickson said.

“Council has completed a U-turn facility just 250m from the intersection and is now constructing a left-hand only exit from Satinay Street into Karawatha Drive.

“While the U-turn facility may require driving an extra 250m, I consider that a small inconvenience when compared with saving lives.

“Work on the left-hand only exit was expected to be completed before school resumed, but the wet weather has caused delays which means it should now be complete in the week of February 2.”

Councillor Dickson said Council had done everything possible to mitigate impact on traffic when school resumes next week.

“We don’t expect the works to impact the flow of traffic, as construction is taking place inside the median strip, however we will monitor the situation closely,” he said.

“Council has consulted with nearby residents since October to keep them informed that these changes are required due to safety reasons.”
