Conditions ease but need for caution remains

The worst of the weekend weather has passed but Sunshine Coast Council is urging locals to remain cautious and alert.

Twenty-seven roads in the region remain closed to traffic due to flooding, while another 37 are ‘open with caution’ due to high water levels.

Local Disaster Coordinator Alan Rogers said Pomona, Cooran, Cooroy, Tewantin, Noosaville and Noosa Heads were the areas most affected by flooding and storm damage.

"There are a lot of roads in the region that remain closed due and I’d strongly urge all local residents to log on to Sunshine Coast Council’s website and check the list of road closures before travelling anywhere by car," he said.

"Of course if anyone does encounter a flooded road or bridge it is crucial that they do not attempt to travel into these areas."

Mr Rogers said Pomona residences had been hardest hit by the torrential rain and storm event.

"A total of 35 Rapid Damage Assessment Overviews were carried out by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service on residences in Pomona and 15 homes were assessed to have sustained medium water damage which means that the gyprock and internal wall lining will require replacement.," he said.

"A further 10 homes had water enter at the level of the floorboards.

"Rifle Street, Station Street and Factory Street were the worst affected areas n Pomona.

"Local residents experiencing personal hardship can seek assistance through the Department of Communities by calling 1800 173 349."
