Coast scores $1.5 million economic boost from University Games
More than 1500 students from across Queensland and Northern New South Wales are heading to the Sunshine Coast next week, where they will compete in 17 sports as part of the Northern University Games. Sunshine Coast Council is a major sponsor.
More than 1500 students from across Queensland and Northern New South Wales are heading to the Sunshine Coast next week, where they will compete in 17 sports as part of the Northern University Games.
Sunshine Coast Council is a major sponsor of the Games.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said more than 1800 people would visit the region for the Games, including students and their families, team managers and volunteers.
“We estimate these visiors will generate over $1.5 million of economic activity for the Sunshine Coast, including 8000 room nights for our local accommodation providers,” Mayor Jamieson said.
Tourism, Sport and Major Event portfolio councillor Jason OPray said this year’s Games included more events than ever before.
“There are 17 sports, including basketball, netball, touch football and soccer, and many of these will have more than 15 teams competing,” Cr O’Pray said.
“This wonderful multi-sport event is the latest of many major events held in our beautiful region, attracting large visitor numbers, providing a very welcome boost for our small businesses and helping to create a sustainable local economy.
“My personal mission for the coming week is to watch as many of these events as possible – I can’t wait to cheer on these very talented athletes and I’d encourage others to do the same.”
The Games were also hosted on the Sunshine Coast in 2009.
