Capture backyard biodiversity and get snap happy

Sunshine Coast nature lovers now have the chance to get snap-happy for council’s Backyard Biodiversity photo competition.
The photo competition searches for pictures that demonstrate backyard biodiversity by featuring a locally native plant or animal in a Sunshine Coast yard.
Environment Portfolio holder councillor Keryn Jones said that council is zooming in on biodiversity on 2010, the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity.
“It’s great to launch a competition that will help people to learn about the variety of life in their own backyard, right on their door step,” Cr Jones said.
“Biodiversity means the plants, animals, micro-organisms, the genes they contain and the ecosystems of which they are part of.
“We’re seeking images in two categories—locally native plants and locally native animals.
“Both categories are split up into adult and junior (12 and under).
“The photos could be of species ranging from scribbly gums to staghorns, gliders to goshawks, and everything in between.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the images in both categories and wish all entrants good luck!”
The competition is now open and runs throughout GreenJune, closing at 5pm 30 June 2010.
Photographers can enter up to three images and need to complete an entry form for each entry and obtain consent forms from anyone identifiable in their picture.
Entry is free. Prizes will be to the value of $250 for winners and $150 for runners-up in the adult categories, and $100 and $50 for junior categories.
Visit the events calendar at Council's website for entry forms and details.
