A significant step has been taken towards more affordable housing on the Coast with the opening of a Recreation Trail at Bli Bli that borders a new housing development.
Sunshine Coast Council and Halcyon officially opened the Bli Bli Recreation Trail – Maroochy River Section and welcomed the new homeowners at Halcyon Landing.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new trail and Halcyon Landing came about thanks to funding provided by the Australian Government’s Housing Affordability Fund program.
“Council received a $2.1million grant from the Housing Affordability Fund (HAF) and that was the necessary economic stimulus for the Bli Bli affordable housing project to proceed,” he said.
“100% of the grant funds are returned in savings through project cost offsets to Halcyon home owners.
“It’s a smart way of providing affordable housing options for people and of ensuring it’s not at the expense of important public infrastructure like the Bli Bli recreation trail.
“All of the homes are sold at a reduced market value as infrastructure investment is funded by the HAF program. The grant effectively means there are savings in the cost of building the homes that are passed on in savings to the homeowner.
“Jobs have been created, homes have been built, local business has been supported and a wonderful new recreational resource has been created for the entire Sunshine Coast community to enjoy.”
Halcyon’s Joint Managing Director Paul Melville said working with Sunshine Coast Council has been a rewarding opportunity to bring affordable housing to the Sunshine Coast.
“There are a number of active retirees moving to the Coast with diverse social and economic needs when it comes to buying a home,” Mr Melville said.
“Halcyon Landing delivers a variety of housing styles, sizes and designs with ‘8 star’ energy ratings that give homeowners more options to suit their budget.
“We’ve worked closely with council, the Sunshine Coast Housing Affordability Taskforce and the Australian Government to make this affordable housing project a reality and to help reduce the cost of new homes for homeowners.
“A total of 170 new homes will be built at Halcyon Landing and so far 90% of Stage One has already been sold and Stage 2 is open for registration.”
