ACA announces a brand-new elite level cycling event to the Sunshine Coast for 2021
The Cycle Sunshine Coast Tour is a 4-day National Road Series event and will run from the 14 to 17 October 2021
After three years of international and domestic success, the Australia Cycling Academy has announced that that they will be bringing the action home to the Sunshine Coast in 2021. In partnership with the Sunshine Coast Council, the Cycle Sunshine Coast Tour is a 4-day National Road Series event and will run from the 14 to 17 October.
The event is expected to be a massive boost for cycling in the region, with the country’s top riders flooding to the coast for the first time and showcasing the region via nationally broadcasted stages.
Economy portfolio Cr Jason O’Pray said the inaugural event would benefit the Sunshine Coast tourism, sport and leisure industries.
“National television coverage of the festival will showcase our region as a premium cycling destination and encourage increased participation in major events for visitors and locals alike. “
The festival offers events for the elite rider through to mass participation community rides, with courses spread throughout our picturesque region. This fantastic variety will mean there’s something for everyone to enjoy throughout the event,” Cr O’Pray said.
It is an event expected to bring almost 1000 competitors from outside the region and inject more than $490,000 into the local economy from race participants alone.
AusCycling General Manager Kipp Kaufmann said of the announcement, “It is exciting to have a new cycling festival in this iconic location. The Sunshine Coast provides some of the best riding conditions in Australia. Riders will enjoy everything about coming to the region.”
The ACA is working in conjunction with Cycling Australia to ensure the success of the event as well as the Masters National Championship that will run the week before, bringing a festival of cycling to the coast and highlighting the strong links the ACA is developing at regional and national levels.
Ben Kersten, ACA General Manager said “we are thrilled to announce the inaugural Cycle Sunshine Coast Tour for 2021.
"We race all around the world throughout the year, but to have the opportunity to put on an event of this caliber and have our team race in front of their home crown will be something special.
"We hope this new and exciting event will underpin the region’s high-performance sporting credibility and putting the Sunshine Coast on the global cycling map. The event will bring all the action to our local partners and supporters and further grow the region as a cycling mecca,” Mr Kersten said.
Next month the ACA is due to announce its new roster, sponsors and the 2021 season of national and international events.
