Sunshine Coast Council is pleased to offer community members an opportunity to participate in an interactive board game-based experience, ‘The Adaptation Game’.

The Adaptation Game is designed to help people and communities better understand extreme weather events – such as heatwaves, floods, and fires – and how we will be impacted by slower shifts in our climate like increasing average temperatures, sea level rise and higher intensity rainfall events, now and into the coming decades. It explores practical actions everyone can take to build their own resilience, as well as ways our community can prepare for climate-related challenges together.

How does the game work?

The game draws on scientific evidence and plausible localised storylines about how climate change is expected to impact the Sunshine Coast.

You play as yourself in your day-to-day life, working with the game’s other three players to find ways to prepare for climate-related challenges through various scenarios.

Essentially, it’s a community-scale scenario planning tool to be better prepared for climate-related weather events.

A trained facilitator guides you through the game.

Why should I play The Adaptation Game?

Climate change can bring feelings of anxiousness or overwhelm. However, there are ways everyone can reduce the impacts of natural disasters to their families, in their street, suburb or region.

Players explore these opportunities and work together across different players’ individual perspectives. By doing this, we can empower people and communities, forging new connections and friendships along the way.

People often leave the game feeling inspired and empowered to take simple actions at home that build their resilience and capability, tailored to their own needs.

The game also provides information about the wide array of Council’s community projects and programs on offer and provides an opportunity to give feedback to Council on how useful they would be in the game scenarios.

TAG is a key initiative in our plan to help the community be more ready, empowered and stronger together. To learn more about the proactive steps underway, and how you can be part of collective efforts to strengthen our climate and disaster resilience on the Sunshine Coast, go to Council’s website.

As part of our Sunshine Coast Biosphere, the game supports a thriving future where people and nature live in harmony. It contributes to a climate-ready region by promoting local knowledge, sustainable choices, and community-led solutions.

Together, we’re adapting for tomorrow – today.
