Winner of the research, policy and communications category.
On 25 June 2020, the Sunshine Coast design book won a Queensland Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture award in the research, policy and communications category. The book will now be in the running for a national landscape architecture award.
Award citation
"This is not a document for designers, it is a must-read for anyone who invests in or has policy oversight for the health and well-being of not only the Sunshine Coast but for all of Queensland. The Sunshine Coast Design Strategy establishes a simple set of design principles to guide a new era of place-based decision making in a fast-growing region. In a world of pandemics, fires or floods, cyclones or drought, these principles are must haves and should be embedded in the strategic framework of the Sunshine Coast planning scheme for the benefit of the many people and places that call the Sunshine Coast home, both now and into the future".
This award celebrates councils commitment to educate on how to achieve good design and encourage a place-based approach to design to protect all that the community loves about living on the Sunshine Coast. Importantly, this award reflects the Sunshine Coast Council vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region.

2025 Commendation for urban design
Created by the Sunshine Coast Council, the Design Guide provides helpful and practical information to ensure well-designed apartments and townhouses. This Guide also has the potential to improve the quality of housing densification in the region.
The jury said the Design Guide is “highly relevant to the challenges of a region grappling with how to maintain its unique identity in the face of unprecedented growth.”

Grounded in a deep appreciation for place, climate, and community, the guide provides a clear and simple approach to design that honours the region’s unique identity while fostering progressive urban development. By prioritising responsive architecture, ecological sensitivity, and human-centered spaces, the guide sets a benchmark for sustainable growth, one that hopefully ensures that future projects integrate seamlessly into the Sunshine Coast’s landscape and cultural fabric. Produced by Council architects and urban designers in a collaborative approach with industry representatives and design professionals, this new guide follows on from the award winning the Sunshine Coast Design book. Sunshine Coast Design seeks to strengthen and enhance all that residents and visitors love about the Sunshine Coast, ensuring our unique look and feel is maintained in the future.
