New landscape features slated for the Dicky Beach precinct – including a hull-shaped viewing platform, sculptural elements inspired by barnacles and a landmark bus stop with rusty steel ship ‘ribs’ – will upgrade the public area and commemorate the SS Dicky wreck.

A 3D visualisation of the wreck, visible via mobile devices, and a traditional navigational device on the platform will also make it easy for people to see where the wreck once laid.

The upgrades are part of a new long-term plan by Sunshine Coast Council, which will see extensive upgrades to existing facilities and $1.7 million of new features.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the plan reflected the community’s vision and priorities for Dicky Beach.

“Dicky Beach is a beautiful part of the Sunshine Coast with a distinct character and we will ensure any future improvements retain that,” Cr Dwyer said.

“The designers have drawn inspiration from the SS Dicky wreck in very clever and exciting ways to tell the story of the shipwreck and its meaning to this community.

“The SS Dicky wreck may be gone, but it’s certainly not forgotten and these wreck-inspired designs and creative navigational tools will ensure that it is remembered and recognised by generations to come.”

The plan was developed following two stages of community consultation and will also improve the open space area for recreation, play and social gatherings.

Following endorsement of the plan at council’s November Ordinary Meeting, the plan will be considered for funding in future budget deliberations and will be used to apply for state and federal funding.
