Work starts Monday on Noosa’s new sand shifter

Work on the duplication of Noosa Spit’s existing sand shift system, which will double the amount of sand moved across the Noosa beach, will start Monday 17 January.
The $1.65 million project reflects the success of the existing system, which started as a three-year trial in 2005.
Coastal Engineer Denis Shaw said that sand pump takes sand from the north-west end of the Noosa beach to the south-east end.
"The existing trial system is working really well but there’s a limit to the amount of sand it can move," Mr Shaw said.
"The new system, located in the same place, will be able to pump an extra 30,000 cubic meters of sand, it will also look better.
"The shifter is set back from the beach and mostly hidden from view by vegetation, but it’s getting a revamp and the building and fencing will be a lot smarter.
"Once the new system is up and running, electric pumps will replace the existing diesel ones. These will run at night in the off-peak period and are a lot quieter.
"We expect the system to be operational by winter this year."
