Local artist Sam Vatovey was awarded the Best of Show at the official opening of the Local Artists – Local Content Art Prize exhibition last night for her work Drawn for a New Beginning (pictured).
The winning work is an interpretation of the landscape around Lake MacDonald.
In her artist statement, Sam said: “The melaleuca trees and marshy ground are represented in a way that appears to extend beyond the limits of the picture frame giving an impression of fluidity, fluctuation and change that is characteristic of this evanescent landscape.”.
Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski, who officially opened the exhibition, congratulated the finalists on their outstanding works.
“Now in its fourth year, the Local Artists – Local Content Art Prize exhibition has become a highlight of Caloundra Regional Gallery’s annual exhibition calendar, featuring the formidable talent of our local artists,” Cr Baberowski said.
“Congratulations to the winners of each category - Sam Vatovey, Linda Pollard, Marvene Ash, Robert McKeown and Tory Richards.
“I would also like to thank artist Rick Everingham for taking on the judging role for this year’s prize – a huge responsibility but one that I’m sure was very rewarding.”
Friends, Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc. president Marie Pigott said the quality of entries in the 2017 art prize was outstanding, encompassing everything from traditional to contemporary styles.
“The works depict the Sunshine Coast in all its glory, showcasing everything from coastal and hinterland landscapes, through to native wildlife, buildings and prominent community members,” Mrs Pigott said.
“This art award provides a great opportunity for our talented local artists to be recognised and to exhibit their work in a regional gallery to a national audience.
“All 40 finalist pieces will be available for purchase so it’s a great opportunity for gallery visitors to invest in an amazing piece of local art to display in their home, office or business.”
