Wet weather and high tides will affect the Coast this Australia Day weekend

The Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group will ‘stand up’ from 6am Saturday in response to the predicted heavy rainfall and strong winds expected over the weekend.

Local Disaster Coordinator, Alan Rogers said the heaviest rainfall is expected Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

“We urge residents to make preparations for the very heavy rainfall by checking drains, clearing gutters and, if in low lying areas, pick up some sand bags from your local hardware store.” Mr Rogers said.

“We seriously urge people to reconsider any travel plans they may have for Saturday afternoon and Sunday as there is likely to be flash flooding on the roads.

“It’s also important ensure that your kids don’t play in flooded creeks.

“Be aware of debris in the rivers and on our beaches, and again, check conditions with the lifeguard before swimming at your local beach.”

“There is also expected to be very big waves and dangerous surf conditions on the beaches especially around the high-tide on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The high tides are expected to be above a King Tide so people in low lying coastal areas, including caravan parks, should be prepared.

“Caravan Park onsite managers monitor Bureau of Meteorology broadcasts (BOM) and are directed by the appropriate disaster agencies should further action be required, eg evacuations.

“For people likely to become isolated our advice is to make sure that you have enough food, batteries and water to last for three days.

“Boaties should refer to the Marine Safety Queensland ( http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/) website for information on boating conditions.

“And remember – if it’s flooded – forget it! Do not cross a flooded road.”
