So today being St Patrick’s Day, you might be asking yourself the question: How many people on the Sunshine Coast claim to have Irish ancestry?

Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s suite of web-based demographic tools, the question is a fairly easy one to answer.

Here are some facts:

  • In 2011, 11.9% of people on the Sunshine Coast claimed to have Irish ancestry;
  • This is a higher percentage than Brisbane (11.5%), South-East Queensland (11.4%), Queensland (11.2%) or Australia (9.7%);
  • The highest concentrations of Irish ancestry (proportionally) were in the areas around Kenilworth (15.8%), Mapleton/Flaxton (14.3%), Caloundra to Shelly Beach (13.9%) and Maleny (13.6%);
  • The greatest number of people with Irish ancestry were in Buderim (3643 people), Wurtulla/Buddina (2666 people), Maroochydore (1865 people) and Nambour (1836 people)
