Inspired by one of the world’s most recognised children’s books, Bundaberg textile artist Karen Walden recreates this lovable tale of metamorphosis as a fusion of craft and literature. To create the ten colourful fabric ‘pages’, Ms Walden used a mixture of hand dyed fabrics, machine appliqué, paints and pencils. Each page is recreated in exact detail, with all 225 words stitched alongside the much-loved illustrations as the caterpillar eats his way to becoming a butterfly.
This exhibition travels with a dedicated ‘comfy’ storytelling area, complete with a mini-library of classic children’s books from author Eric Carle plus beautifully illustrated text that detail the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. Very Hungry Caterpillar puppets are also supplied for gallery staff, teachers and local storytellers to further enrich children’s experiences of the exhibition and the books.
Artslink Queensland’s Exhibition Touring Program Director, Lisa Beilby said as one of our most cherished books for children, The Very Hungry Caterpillar exhibition will capture the imagination and hearts of both the young and old.
"With pages larger than life, The Very Hungry Caterpillar invites viewers to walk through the book, allowing them to become entwined and enchanted with this world-renowned children’s tale," she said.
"By adding the mini-storytelling centre, we further the enjoyment of the show for all the knowledge-hungry little visitors as well."
In celebration of the National Year of Reading, come and read your favourite childhood stories or join one of our storytelling sessions in conjunction with the exhibition, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
