There are less than two weeks until the region’s free end-of year event - New Year’s Eve, Mooloolaba - which also marks the finale of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast celebrations.

The Esplanade, Mooloolaba, is the place to be this NYE with a feast of free entertainment from 4pm until midnight plus one final chance to help council break a Guinness World Record for the most contributions to a greeting card.

Mayor Jamieson said NYE Mooloolaba would be an event for the whole family.

“This year we have a great line-up of live entertainment for the whole family on one of the best beaches on our Coast,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“For the final time this year we are celebrating 50 years since the naming of the Sunshine Coast and we are hoping to break a Guinness World Record for the most contributions to a greeting card.

“We are aiming to reach 18,000 contributions so we need mums, dads, kids, locals and visitors to head along to the free family-friendly event and sign the card.”

Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said there was something for all ages for people to enjoy in this year’s program.

There’s a great line-up across two stages, including a meet and greet with the much loved characters from Universal Studios Despicable Me 3™ and Dreamworks Kung Fu Panda, plus great live entertainment from acts such as The Floating Bridges and Mason Hope, just to name a few.

“We’re proud to put on this event for our residents and visitors to celebrate in Mooloolaba, one of the coast’s most iconic locations,” Cr Connolly said.

Gates open at 4pm with lots of family friendly activities, including the Minions activity centre, an inflatable slide and obstacle course, face painting and temporary tattoos.

The Andrea Kirwin Trio will kick off festivities on the Main Stage from 4.30pm followed by local artist Mason Hope.

The Dan Horne Trio will play from 6.15pm followed by The Floating Bridges, who will be the final act before the 8.30pm fireworks.

Vegas Please will play from 8.40pm leading into the fireworks display at midnight.

In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast celebrations, the fireworks displays at 8.30pm and midnight will both feature unique effects.

Another special addition will be a huge 15 metre by 15 metre public art installation called Zspyda, produced by local artist Lucas Salton, and was originally commissioned by Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival for debut at the 2017 Horizon Festival.

Inspired by David Bowie’s Spider from Mars, the sculpture will be choreographed into a beach dance party and two fireworks display.

SeaFM will be broadcasting live from 4pm at Loo with a View, followed by a live ClubCast with DJ’s playing from 7.30pm until midnight on the Sea Stage down on the beach.

Delicious food will be available from local vendors, restaurants and cafes on The Esplanade.

Council will be providing free shuttle services to and from the event from the University of the Sunshine Coast, departing every 30 minutes from 5pm to 8pm and back to USC again from 8.45pm.

For all other paid bus services to Mooloolaba, please visit the Translink website at www.translink.com.au.

There will be free shuttle services home from NYE Mooloolaba to Kawana Shoppingworld, University of the Sunshine Coast or Maroochydore Bus Station from 8:45pm. All shuttle services will terminate at 2am.

Please note that intoxicated people or the carrying of alcohol will not be permitted on board buses.

Don’t forget New Year’s Eve Mooloolaba is a drug, alcohol and glass free event. Intoxicated people will not be permitted entry.

In an effort to minimise the event’s carbon footprint, council is banning helium balloons and disposable chemical glow products (battery operated LED products are acceptable) which may end up in landfill or waterways harming marine life.

A reminder to pet owners in the vicinity to ensure their pets are safe and secure for the duration of the event as the noise of fireworks may cause them to become agitated.

Council delivers this iconic event in a relaxed, safe, security patrolled and fenced event zone in partnership with a number of organisations, including Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance Service, SES, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, Safe Nite Out, Red Frogs and Sunshine Coast First Aid Volunteers, ensuring public safety is paramount.

The celebrations at Mooloolaba are only one of a number of New Year’s celebrations planned across the Sunshine Coast. The Kings Beach, Caloundra and Coolum Beach events are also supported by council.

Visit council’s website for more details on the event including traffic and transport information.

Sunshine Coast Council gratefully acknowledges its New Year’s Eve Mooloolaba supporters – Sea FM, Mix FM and The Surf Club Mooloolaba.
