Take a colourful walk through history at Buderim

Sunshine Coast Council invites the community to take a colourful walk through history when WALK Buderim is unveiled this Friday 3 August 2012.
Division 7 Councillor Ted Hungerford said WALK Buderim is the fourth self-guided town walk launched in the WALK Sunshine Coast series and rediscovers some of the colourful history of Buderim along the town’s footpaths and past its shops and gardens.
"Council created WALK Buderim with the valuable assistance from Buderim Historical Society, Buderim War Memorial Community Association, Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Inc. and the Buderim community," said Cr Hungerford.
"It is also fitting that WALK Buderim is launched in 2012 when the community celebrates 150 years since the first record of the town was made by Tom Petrie.
"Our goal is to encourage the community to explore the heritage of their town together by participating in the self-guided walks while learning about the history, events and characters who helped shape its growth."
Cr Hungerford said along the walk people will find out interesting facts such as the name Buderim is derived from the Aboriginal word badderam for the Hairpin Honeysuckle, a type of Banksia, which grew on the lower slopes of Buderim.
"Learn about the treasures held at the Pioneer Cottage and visit Buderim Library," Cr Hungerford said.
"Take a breather at one of the myriad of cafés in Buderim, including the converted Vandy’s Garage, which still features original petrol pumps.
"Or find out about the Buderim-Palmwoods Tramway, constructed between 1911-1914, to transport farm produce and passengers, and the early South Sea Islander community’s contribution to the town.
"A series of plaques mark the route through Buderim, unfolding stories enhanced by historical photographs, offering a fresh and unusual walking experience."
The WALK Buderim brochure, which includes a map and list of the historic sites, is available at the Old Post Office and the Pioneer Cottage, or can be downloaded from council’s website, where brochures for other heritage town walks across the Sunshine Coast are also available.
Anyone interested in learning more about the history of Buderim is invited to join local historians this Friday 3 August at 10.45 a.m. to discover the 20 sites of WALK Buderim.
WALK Buderim is a Sunshine Coast Council initiative funded by the Cultural Heritage Levy.
